Wapiti Campground
Wapiti is a great campsite for family outings at any time of year. It's close to town for supply runs and in the winter campers often get first crack at the slopes and cross-country trails (because to really appreciate a campfire, you have to use it to thaw your ski boots!)
Location: Located on the Icefields Parkway 5.4kms south of Jasper across from Whistlers Campground. Jasper National Park Alberta.
Description: This is one of the largest campgrounds in Jasper National Park containing 644 campsites. Expect crowds of people here during peak season. Amenities include electricity, hot showers, flush toilets, sani dumps, interpretive programs, camp kitchens and fire pits. Fire wood is available when purchasing a fire permit. Large campgrounds like this are fun to explore with a bicycle. You're also close enough to ride your bike 3kms to Jasper or walk along the Athabasca River. Jasper town site is very small, you can easily walk through the entire town in a morning or afternoon outing.
Wapiti campground has more trees and offers more privacy between campsites than nearby Whistlers Campground. It also makes for a perfect base camp if you want to spend a few days exploring the local area. Patricia Lake, Pyramid Lake, Lac Beauvert, Maligne Lake, Maligne Canyon, Medicine Lake, Mount Edith Cavell, Lake Edith, Lake Annette, Hanging Valley, Jasper Park Lodge and Miette Hot Springs are all close to here. The Jasper Tramway up Whistlers mountain is located a few kms away. You can ride the Tram almost to the top of Mount Whistler then hike another 200ms to the summit. Night skies here rank # 4 on the Bortle Scale. See the official web site link below for fees, opening and closing dates.
